The Schwendemans contacted Clark & Company with an interest to build a new house in the midst of their property, nestled in a beautiful pasture. Their property is bordered by farmland that is protected from future development by conservation easements. They were interested in building a practical, casual, and environmentally considerate home.
With a history as one of the first EarthCraft builders in the Roanoke Valley, Clark & Company was a natural fit. While living in another state, the Schwendemans began corresponding with Clark & Company via email. They conveyed their desires and wishes, and a house was born!
One of the things that was different about this project was the geographical seperation. In addition to phone calls, Clark & Company sent email updates regularly to the homeowners, and posted numerous pictures of the project in order to keep them informed of the progress.
The Clark & Company crew handled the project from day one, performing the following and more:
The house was tested by a third-party verifier, and met or exceeded the requirements set forth by EarthCraft. It also exceeded the requirements of the Energy Star program, which ensures substantial energy savings every month.
The homeowners decided to personally install the tile flooring, woodstove, and to paint the interior of the house. They have been busy with these projects, as well as landscaping, gardening, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Shortly after they moved in, the homeowners requested Clark & Company to come back and build their "carriage shed".
The carriage shed is a detatched garage, constructed with locally harvested and locally milled heart pine. It is another beautiful and useful addition to their property.
